The Uncommon Reader

Book design for the University of Lisbon Press.

"The Uncommon Reader" is a tribute to books, writers and readers. It is true that there is nothing exceptional about a person who reads, unless that person is the Queen of England. In this work, the Queen unexpectedly discovers an enormous pleasure in reading. Each reader will identify with singular peculiarities of the character in this book. So it is not these characteristics that make this reader uncommon, but rather the position she occupies and the disruption caused to her previously unquestionable duties that her passion for reading creates.
Alan Bennett reports on the progression of the Queen's reading habits, the stratagems of senior officials of the Royal House and members of the government to minimize the damage caused, but he does so with the bitter and benevolent sense of humor he has become known for.

The mission of the Lisbon University Press is to publish original manuscripts, of proven scientific and cultural merit, in all fields of knowledge; publish fundamental essays, in all fields of knowledge; publish volumes, resulting from singular cultural or institutional projects, whose topics are considered of relevant interest to the University of Lisbon.
